The latest insight into his debut solo album ‘Notes From The Boneyard’ (out 22 September, via Deltasonic), finds the Irish songwriter and multi-instrumentalist colouring-in the fictional world of the Boneyard with an elegant, if eerie, new composition.

Taking its title from the John Fante novel of the same name, “Ask The Dust” is an alternate version of the Theme Song from an upcoming movie entitled ‘The Spin’ which McKowski has written the original story for and is currently composing the soundtrack for. Speaking about the upcoming film and “Ask The Dust”’s place within it, McKowski says:

“The movie is about two friends who own a failing record shop in a small town, and take a road trip in search of a priceless record that could be the answer to all their problems. If only it would go to plan… The alternate version of the theme presented here is a demented lullaby playing on a broken penny arcade machine, lost somewhere in an abandoned carnival.”

Shot in various forgotten carnivals around the world, the track is accompanied by a filmic official video which is available to watch now here:

“Ask the Dust” follows in the footsteps of recent single Return of Pygmy Pony” (feat. Howe Gelb) which also originally stemmed from a movie (the Lily Gladstone starring sci-fi western ‘Quantum Cowboys’), plus earlier teaser track “Lake”; with all three tracks due to appear on McKowski’s upcoming LP ‘Notes From The Boneyard’. An ambitious set of ornately designed instrumentals, its ten tracks are intended to transport the listener on a dreamlike waltz through the semi-fictional world where McKowski dwells, known only as ‘The Boneyard.  Alongside its unique blend of acoustic guitars, strings, analog synths, and electronic toys, which all play into Mckowski’s haunting and evocative soundscapes; the album is also gifted with contributions from Steve Wickham (viola), Howe Gelb (guitar), Laura Mcafadden (cello), Dave Murphy (pedal steel), plus St Francis Hotel, who adds further elements of atmosphere and production.

Like the wooden beauty of Angelo Badalementi’s ‘Straight Story’ mixed with the dark synth undertones such as Carpenter-esque Moog; it’s the ideal companion for those pensive days and long nocturnal hours.  Dappled with light and shade, eeriness and hopefulness, the familiar and not-so; expect a cinematic masterclass in instrumental storytelling when you enter ‘Notes From The Boneyard’. Set for release on 22 September 2023 on Deltasonic Records (The Coral, The Zutons), it will be available on ltd vinyl, cassette, cd, and digital, from all major platforms and retailers.
