Southend-on-Sea’s own, The Horrors, are on tour promoting their brand new album Night Life. After a three year break, the popular rock band are back doing a number of intimate shows around the UK ahead of the big release! Like many others you’re probably confused as to why The Horrors are doing small shows in venues that most bands are starting out in, don’t worry they are back around at the end of the year and hitting Manchester’s New Century Hall.

With this being a record shop tour there’s no support, so for those who want to be home early after a gig this might have been for you. Start time being at 8pm with just one band playing for most people like myself sounds like absolute heaven. Doors were at 7pm and it didn’t take long for the crowd to appear and the place to start filling up, from front to back of the venue the place was packed out!

Vocalist Faris Badwan took a flag from a member of the crowd in the front row showing the Palestine flag and attaching it to his mic stand for the remainder of the performance, bassist Rhys Webb had the energy and carried it for the rest of the band with his moves that flowed well with the electronic work from keyboardist Millie Kidd. Rhys joked around with the crowd members in the front row and had an overall cheery and fun vibe which was a surprise considering at the start of the set he had a straight faced expression for the first song before the smile appeared and the goofy behaviour which works with the flow of each track appeared.

The Horrors for those who might not know have a traditional goth sound, which is my best way of describing their sound for those who may not have heard their stuff before. If you love the flowy kind of music that makes you feel like you’re a little bit high without the drug, they are that kind of band that becomes that drug for you. The energy is nice and chilled throughout the set which is just lovely, sometimes you want those chilled moments at gigs and this is the band that delivers that, I don’t know if this was because it was a smaller venue or because that is just their overall vibe but it was the most relaxed gig I’ve been to in a while with it also being heavily entertaining throughout the performance.

If you love The Horrors’ new album NightLife, then get yourself to their New Century Hall show or one of the various tour dates that they have coming up for a night that makes you feel like you’re in the clouds.
